What is Masjid Aisha?

Masjid Aisha stands in the Al-Taneem area of Makkah, on the road towards Madinah. Al-Taneem is the nearest point to Masjid al-Haram that lies outside the boundary of the Haram. Because of this, people who are already inside Makkah and want to do Umrah go out to Masjid Aisha to enter ihram.

The mosque is named after Aisha (RA), the wife of the Prophet (PBUH). During the Farewell Hajj, she could not do her Umrah with the others, so the Prophet (PBUH) asked her brother, Abdur-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr, to take her out to Al-Taneem, where she entered ihram for her Umrah. A mosque has stood here for centuries; the present building was rebuilt in the time of King Fahd and holds about 15,000 worshippers.

Who goes to Masjid Aisha for ihram?

  • People living or staying in Makkah who want to do Umrah.
  • Pilgrims who came to Makkah without ihram, for example on a visit or for work, and now want to do Umrah. Ask your scholar about your own case.
  • Families and groups who want a short, easy trip to enter ihram near the city.

Pilgrims arriving from outside Makkah, by plane, road or train, must enter ihram at the Miqat on their route, not at Masjid Aisha. For questions about ihram rules or repeating Umrah, ask your scholar or group leader.

Your trip, step by step

  1. Get ready at the hotel. Many people bathe and put on their ihram clothes at the hotel, which saves time. You can also change at the mosque.
  2. Pickup. Your driver collects you at your hotel. The drive takes 15 to 30 minutes.
  3. At Masjid Aisha. Use the washrooms and changing areas, pray two rak'ahs if you wish, and make your intention (niyyah) for Umrah. Your driver waits in the parking area.
  4. Back to the Haram. The driver drops you at the nearest point to Masjid al-Haram, so you can go straight to Tawaf.
