Masjid Quba

Masjid Quba is the first mosque in Islam. When the Prophet (PBUH) arrived from Makkah on the Hijrah in 622 CE, he stopped at Quba, on the southern edge of Madinah, and laid its first stone; his Companions finished the building. The Prophet (PBUH) used to visit Quba every Saturday, walking or riding, and according to a hadith, praying two rak'ahs here after making wudu at home carries a reward like that of an Umrah. The present white mosque was rebuilt in the 1980s and is being expanded to hold about 66,000 worshippers.

Masjid al-Qiblatain

Masjid al-Qiblatain, the Mosque of the Two Qiblas, is about 5 km north-west of Masjid an-Nabawi. In 2 AH, Muslims praying here towards Jerusalem received the command to turn towards the Kaaba in Makkah, revealed in Surah al-Baqarah (2:144), and they turned during the prayer. For many years the mosque had two prayer niches; since its rebuilding in 1987, a marker under a small dome recalls the old direction.

Mount Uhud and Masjid Sayyid al-Shuhada

Mount Uhud is a long reddish mountain about 4 km north of Masjid an-Nabawi. In 625 CE the Battle of Uhud was fought at its foot. The Muslims were winning until the archers left their post on a small hill to collect the spoils, and the Makkan cavalry attacked from behind. Many Companions were killed, including Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib (RA), the uncle of the Prophet (PBUH), and the Prophet (PBUH) himself was wounded.

  • Martyrs' cemetery. About seventy martyrs of Uhud are buried here, with Hamza (RA). Visitors make dua for them.
  • Archers' hill (Jabal al-Rumah). The small hill opposite the cemetery where the archers stood.
  • Masjid Sayyid al-Shuhada. The large mosque built near the cemetery and named after Hamza (RA), the "master of the martyrs".

The Seven Mosques and Masjid al-Fath

On the western side of Mount Sala' stand the small mosques known as the Seven Mosques. They mark the place of the trench the Muslims dug to defend Madinah in the Battle of the Trench (al-Khandaq, also called al-Ahzab). The largest is Masjid al-Fath, where the Prophet (PBUH) made dua during the battle. The others are named after Abu Bakr, Umar, Ali, Fatimah and Salman al-Farsi (RA); there are six here, and Masjid al-Qiblatain, about 1 km away, is usually counted as the seventh.

Well of Uthman (Bir Rumah)

Bir Rumah, north-west of Masjid an-Nabawi, is the well that Uthman ibn Affan (RA) bought and gave to the people of Madinah so that everyone could drink from it freely. It is still remembered as one of the first charitable endowments (waqf) in Islam, and the land around it is a date farm today.

Bir Ghars

Bir Ghars is one of the ancient wells of Madinah, on the eastern side of the city near Quba. It is linked in the Seerah to the Prophet (PBUH). The well has been restored and can be seen by visitors.

Garden of Salman al-Farsi

Salman al-Farsi (RA) came to Madinah as a slave. To win his freedom, his owner asked for gold and for 300 date palms to be planted. The Prophet (PBUH) and the Companions planted the palms with him, and he was freed. A date garden with a well near Quba is remembered as the place of these palms; many visitors buy dates here.

House of Ali and Fatimah

Our drivers also show you the place traditionally linked to the house of Ali (RA) and Fatimah (RA), the daughter of the Prophet (PBUH), and explain its history on the way.
