The Miqat stop at Abyar Ali (Dhul Hulayfah)
If you travel from Madinah to Makkah for Umrah, you must be in ihram before you pass the Miqat. For people coming from Madinah, the Miqat is Masjid Dhul Hulayfah, also called Abyar Ali or Bir Ali.
- Where it is. On the southern edge of Madinah, about 14 km from Masjid an-Nabawi (Saudipedia). It is the first stop after you leave your hotel.
- What is there. A large mosque with hundreds of washrooms, areas for ablution, bathing and changing into ihram, and a prayer hall.
- What pilgrims do there. Many make ghusl or wudu, put on their ihram clothes if they have not already, pray two rak'ahs, make their intention (niyyah) for Umrah and begin the Talbiyah.
- How long it takes. Most pilgrims need 20 to 30 minutes. Your driver waits while you get ready.

Madinah to Makkah distance and travel time
From hotel to hotel, Madinah to Makkah is about 440 km by road. After the Miqat, most of the drive is on the Hijrah Highway (Highway 15), a long, straight road south with service stations for prayer, food and washrooms. By taxi it takes 4.5 to 5 hours, including the Miqat stop and a short break.
Arriving in Makkah for Umrah the same day
Many pilgrims leave Madinah after Fajr or after breakfast and reach Makkah in the afternoon. If your room is not ready, leave your bags with the hotel and go to Masjid al-Haram for Umrah. Tell us your plan, and we suggest a pickup time that fits it.
