Makkah to Madinah distance and travel time
From hotel to hotel, Makkah to Madinah is about 440 to 450 km by road. Most of the drive is on the Hijrah Highway (Highway 15), a long, straight road north. By taxi it takes 4.5 to 5 hours, including a short stop for prayer or food. Traffic leaving central Makkah and arriving in central Madinah adds the most time, especially on Fridays and in Ramadan and Hajj season.
Hotel to hotel, from the Haram to Masjid an-Nabawi
- Pickup in Makkah. From any hotel, including the Clock Tower, Jabal Omar, Ajyad, Misfalah, Kudai and Aziziyah. If cars cannot reach the door near the Haram, we agree the nearest point on WhatsApp and the driver helps with your bags.
- On the road. Service stations along the Hijrah Highway have mosques, washrooms and food. Tell your driver when you want to stop.
- Drop-off in Madinah. At your hotel, including the hotels in the central area around Masjid an-Nabawi. Where roads near the mosque are closed, we drop you at the nearest point to your hotel.
Many pilgrims leave after Fajr or after breakfast, so they arrive in daylight and in time to pray at Masjid an-Nabawi. Tell us your plan and we will suggest a pickup time.
7-seater and family taxi from Makkah to Madinah
For families, the Hyundai Staria (from SAR 450) and the GMC Yukon XL (from SAR 850) give more room for passengers and bags on the long drive. Larger groups can book a Toyota HiAce (from SAR 550, up to 11 passengers). Send us the number of passengers and bags, and we suggest the right car.
Ihram, Miqat and Badr
Going from Makkah to Madinah, you do not need to stop at a Miqat for ihram. Ihram matters on the way back: when you return from Madinah to Makkah for Umrah, you enter ihram at Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali), and your driver stops there for you. If you are unsure what applies to you, ask your scholar or group leader.
Badr, where the Battle of Badr took place, lies near the route by a slightly different road. If you want to visit on the way, ask us when you book and we will tell you the extra time and price.

What is the cheapest way from Makkah to Madinah?
For one or two people, the SAPTCO bus or the Haramain train is cheaper per person. For a family or a group, a private taxi is often close in total cost, because the price is per car and it goes hotel to hotel.
Is a taxi better than the Haramain train from Makkah to Madinah?
The train is faster on the rails, but both stations are outside the Haram areas, so you need a ride at each end and you move your bags twice. Tickets also sell out in busy seasons. A taxi goes from hotel door to hotel door.
How do I pay, and can I cancel?
